Byron Center, MI
First Companies worked with Dr. Kevin Knapp (Knapp Orthodontics) and Dr. Chris Powell (Stellar Smiles) to design and construct a building that included two side-by-side dental offices in Byron Center, MI. The design, layout, and requests were different for each office.
Challenges included obtaining a wetlands permit before construction of the project could begin, which took longer than anticipated. First Companies received the wetlands permit in August 2022 and broke ground shortly after. Getting permanent electrical service to the building also involved some creative problem solving.
Inside is a reception area with built-in booths for clients, a slushie machine, a candy wall, and naturally lit treatment bays. This building includes a second floor mezzanine with doctor’s offices, a training room, and a laundry room, all decorated with geometric shapes and lines.
“The First Companies team played a pivotal role in turning my dream into reality. Their ability to conceptualize the vision for the project from day one was truly impressive. The team consistently demonstrated outstanding communication, providing clear and timely updates with a proactive mindset. The project manager, site superintendent, and every team member involved went above and beyond, continually surpassing our expectations. As my first experience with a new build project, they made each step efficient and attainable, leading to a remarkable outcome that we couldn’t be happier with.“

The main floor is space-themed, including planet-themed treatment rooms for Mars, Neptune, and Saturn, as well as a custom mural. This building also has a second floor that will become a staff break room and laundry area, in addition to future build out areas for when Stellar Smiles plans to expand.
“First Companies was great to work with on my first construction project. They were very helpful in the design process and did a great job finding ways to make the project fit my budget. I will definitely stick with them for future projects.”
