First Companies worked with Dr. Kevin Knapp (Knapp Orthodontics) and Dr. Chris Powell (Stellar Smiles) to design and construct a building that included two side-by-side dental offices in Byron Center, MI. The design, layout, and requests were different for each office.
Challenges included obtaining a wetlands permit before construction of the project could begin, which took longer than anticipated. First Companies received the wetlands permit in August 2022 and broke ground shortly after. Getting permanent electrical service to the building also involved some creative problem solving.
Knapp Orthodontics
Inside is a reception area with built-in booths for clients, a slushie machine, a candy wall, and naturally lit treatment bays. This building includes a second floor mezzanine with doctor’s offices, a training room, and a laundry room, all decorated with geometric shapes and lines.

Stellar Smiles
The main floor is space-themed, including planet-themed treatment rooms for Mars, Neptune, and Saturn, as well as a custom mural. This building also has a second floor with future build out areas for when Stellar Smiles plans to expand.
Following the successful completion of their initial project with First Companies, Stellar Smiles hired the company again to manage their recent addition giving them three more open bay treatment areas, a private office, large break room, and laundry room. All rooms reflect the outer space theme, including a mural of the solar system and decorative light fixtures. Upfront planning enabled Stellar Smiles to remain open during the three-months of construction. A third phase of construction is planned which will provide additional treatment bays in the future.
