When the city of Kalamazoo re-envisioned its downtown area, they saw the need to accommodate a growing number of visitors. First Companies joined the team hired to renovate the historic Masonic Temple (now a Hilton Garden Inn) as well as construct the new Home2Suites next door.
The first phase included gutting the old Masonic Temple building, including removal of all walls, ceilings, floors, and glass while preserving the character of the original façade. New mechanical systems were installed throughout. The hotel’s interior includes a lobby, restaurant, and bar on the main level with retail and office space on the second floor. Beautifully appointed guest rooms are located on upper floors – many with stunning views of downtown. The team also built a pedestrian bridge that connects the hotel to the parking garage across the street.
The second phase of construction included a new six-story structure for the Hilton Garden Inn, adding a fitness center, laundry room, pool area, and more guest rooms. The final phase, completed in May of 2021, was an eight-story building that is now a new Home2Suites
