Building the Future of Concrete Printing

Client
Mangrove 3D

Location
Caledonia, MI

When Mangrove set out to launch one of the first-of-its-kind advanced 3D concrete printing operations in the United States, they needed a space purpose-built to support a groundbreaking technology and to create an environment that reflected the innovation at the heart of their business. First Companies partnered with Mangrove to transform an existing industrial shell into a headquarters designed for creativity, collaboration, and cutting-edge manufacturing.

Mangrove specializes in 3D concrete printing, producing custom architectural and landscape elements using technology inspired by systems developed in Italy. Their vision required housing a massive concrete printer imported from Europe, along with the specialized infrastructure needed to support its operation. To make this happen, First Companies completed a comprehensive office build-out, including a mezzanine level for C-Suite offices and meeting space, the integration of complex mechanical and utility systems, and the addition of a new structure to house the material silos that feed the printer.

The project came to First Companies through a long-standing relationship with owner Greg Kerkstra and his team. Having successfully collaborated on multiple projects in the Caledonia area, First Companies was selected to serve as construction manager and guide the project from design through completion.

While the finished facility feels seamless, the construction process required extensive coordination and problem-solving. One of the earliest challenges involved constructing the silo addition. Existing sanitary and storm infrastructure had to be relocated before foundations could be installed, and construction sequencing became critical because the silos needed to be set in place before portions of the building enclosure could be completed.

Inside the facility, precision was everything. Specialized pits, rails, and equipment connections had to align perfectly with equipment being manufactured in Italy. With no margin for error, the project team worked through language differences, time zone challenges, and international design coordination to ensure every measurement matched the printer’s exact requirements. Extensive communication and multiple rounds of verification helped eliminate issues before installation.

The project was not without its obstacles. One of the silos was damaged after striking a bridge overpass during transport, creating a delay that affected construction of the addition. Through proactive scheduling and close communication with the client and trade partners, the team was able to adapt and keep the overall project on track. The facility was ultimately completed on schedule despite a demanding timeline and the complexities of introducing first-of-its-kind technology to the site.

The finished interior reflects the innovative spirit of Mangrove’s business. Warm white oak finishes, stained wood millwork, quartz surfaces, decorative lighting, custom tile details, and premium ceiling systems create an environment that feels both sophisticated and welcoming. Throughout the space, materials were carefully selected to reinforce the high-end experience Mangrove wanted clients and partners to associate with its products.

One of the facility’s most distinctive features is the connection between the office environment and the production floor. Large floor-to-ceiling windows allow visitors and employees to view the concrete printing operation from conference rooms and collaborative spaces. Rather than separating manufacturing from the workplace experience, the design intentionally showcases the technology at the heart of the business.

What makes this project particularly special is what it represents. Mangrove is pioneering a new manufacturing capability and creating opportunities for architects, designers, and builders to think differently about concrete construction. First Companies had the opportunity to help create the physical foundation for that vision, delivering a facility that not only supports advanced technology but also inspires the creativity behind it.

The result is a space where innovation, design, and manufacturing come together, demonstrating what can happen when trusted partners collaborate to bring a bold idea to life.
