First Companies was delighted to learn they had been selected to build Heeren Brothers’ new $22 million processing facility in Comstock Park, MI. Since opening their doors in 1933, the Heeren Brothers Produce has continued to grow and innovate. The new facility represents a significant investment in the company’s future as the largest family-owned wholesaler, marketer, and distributor of fresh fruits and vegetables in Michigan. The new 177,000 square foot building was constructed according to LEED best practices and includes many environmentally friendly features, such as a sophisticated, energy-efficient refrigeration facility, with a complex, ammonia cooling system, to maintain an ideal temperature for apple storage. Approximately 90,000 square feet is used for the company’s apple storage, production, and packaging.

“This was a very technical and very challenging project, but First Companies exceeded our expectations. The project managers’ attention to every detail was exceptional. They walked us through each step of the project and were as cost-conscious as possible. I am very impressed with this space and with First Companies. We have a great relationship.”
