Grand Rapids MI

When First Companies completed the building on 40th street in Grand Rapids, 1-800-HANSONS was one of the first to move in. First Companies constructed the entire building as well as managed the build-out for 1-800-HANSONS to meet the needs of their business as well as convey their brand.  The new space has given 1-800-HANSONS 5,000 square feet with both office and warehouse space.  The staff enjoys a great training room and small kitchenette in addition to new office space and conference room.  Construction was completed in 2015 and the build-out took less than 2 months to complete.

“1-800-HANSONS was looking for perfection while choosing a company to house our business for years to come. We found it in First Companies. First Companies built the exact building that we at 1-800-HANSONS were looking for. We truly couldn’t ask for a more professional group to do business with. The entire team was incredibly easy and professional to work with. Everyone at 1-800-HANSONS could not be happier and look forward to our future together.”  Gary Sherman, General Manager

616 Lofts on Michigan
Grand Rapids MI

616 Lofts on Michigan is the most recent project completed by 616 Development and First Companies. This mixed use building is located in the Midtown neighborhood and was the first ground-up project for 616 Development, with 68,000 square feet and many new and historic amenities. The property includes 54 one and two bedroom apartments, underground parking and 9,700 square feet of retail space on the street level.

“We started construction in September of 2014, which meant pouring a significant amount of concrete during the very harsh winter. First Companies was able to collaborate with Kent Companies to work through the elements to keep the project moving forward, ensuring our completion date was not compromised. Our project manager also took the time to work with the architect, structural engineer and lumber supplier to create a solution for panelized construction that met all building and fire code requirements. This level of pre-planning not only saved us significant amounts of money, but also reduced our original project schedule. Our experience with First Companies has been delightful. They think in the position of the owner, treat subcontractors fairly, and are true partners who consistently exceed our expectations.”  Jeffrey R. Olsen, Project Director, 616 Development

Chambers Dental
Grand Rapids MI

When Dr. Chambers outgrew his original office space, he knew he needed more room for growth, but didn’t want to give up his ideal location on 28th street. Fortunately, a building across the street came available and Dr. Chambers decided to purchase it and undertake a major remodel. First Companies was recommended for the job due to their extensive experience building dental offices. The remodel took the building down to the studs and trusses, but was completed right on time. The L-shaped space gave the staff 3,400 square feet, including 8 operatories, a comfortable waiting area, front desk and business office, consulting space and a separate lab and sterilization area, server room and employee break room.

“I liked the size of First Companies and the excitement they had for the project, as well as their ideas. It just felt like a good fit to me. I had seen some of the work they did for other dentists and they took me to see other offices they had constructed. I also knew that First Companies specialized in building for dentists and I liked that they had a lot of experience in the ‘dental niche.’ The others didn’t offer the same level of expertise.” Dr. Randall Chambers

DJs Landscape Management
Grand Rapids MI

DJ VanderSlik acquired an existing building on the corner of Broadmoor and 44th and hired First Companies to complete a full renovation for his new administrative office. When entering the new office, it is clear this company is in the landscape management business. Eye-catching photos of scenes in nature line the walls, with the use of wood, color, a botanical motif and live plants all bringing in the beauty of nature throughout the office. The architect and interior designer worked together to create a timeless look that conveys the company’s business and brand.

While the construction work progressed well, and without any major challenges, the small lot size (just under an acre) made for a tight space to operate within and manage logistics. The renovation included replacing the roof and putting in a new parking lot for customers. First Companies managed the interior design of the office as well as the construction.

“Our relationship with First Companies goes back many years. I am very familiar with the quality of the company’s work and I knew that First Companies could handle what I wanted to do. I was very impressed with the work they did for Heeren Brothers and at Heritage Pointe. While we had a bit of a ‘floating’ budget and timeline, the project was completed within the parameters we agreed upon. My experience working with First Companies was very good. Our project manager stayed on top of everything and kept us well informed; and the team did a great job with the interior design and finishing touches.”

Foot & Ankle Specialists
Norton Shores/Grand Rapids MI

Foot & Ankle Specialists of West Michigan joins a growing group of medical professionals with offices in beautiful new facilities built by First Companies in Norton Shores and in Grand Rapids, Michigan.  Both locations are part of multi-tenant professional buildings with First Companies managing the building construction as well as the tenant build-outs.  The 2,700 SF Norton Shores office is also home to West Michigan Eye & Laser and West Michigan ENT & Allergy.

The 9,000 SF Grand Rapids office is located in a 40,000 SF building right next to Heritage Pointe on East Paris Avenue. Foot & Ankle Specialists was the first tenant to move in with others to follow soon.  This larger office has a spacious waiting area, 12 exam rooms, administrative offices, a break/conference room and physical therapy area. The doctors and nurses utilize a centralized work area with easy access to the exam rooms for speed and efficiency.  This second project was completed in just 4 months, ahead of schedule and under budget.

“I was very impressed with both the real estate and construction teams at First Companies. Steve (real estate) checked in with us throughout the process, as well as Craig (vice president), to ensure we were well taken care of. We were so comfortable with First Companies, we really didn’t seriously consider other builders. I have overseen other construction projects and our experience with First Companies was very good. Their communications exceeded what is typical of others. I received weekly status reports, text updates and email to keep me informed at all times. Everything so smoothly the first time, we hired them again for build-out of our new Grand Rapids office on East Paris. I would certainly recommend First Companies to others.”  Karen Paradiso, CEO

Franklin Partners/Spectrum Health
Grand Rapids MI

When Spectrum Health decided to move 500 of its employees in the Information Systems department to downtown Grand Rapids, Franklin Partners LLC (owner/developer of 25 Ottawa Ave NW) had the perfect location. First Companies was hired to complete the renovations that included floors 2-6, with the first phase of floors 5 and 6 shown here. Spectrum Health was seeking a high-amenity, urban location to use as a recruiting tool to attract and retain top talent. The “class A” office space provides about 80,000 square feet of open, collaborative workspace with high ceilings, timber structure, exposed columns, and masonry walls.

“First Companies has done an outstanding job on the Spectrum project. The schedule mandated sub-contractors be on time with people and materials, and everyone has excelled in their respective tasks. Material issues were worked through in a timely manner and Spectrum is delighted with the finished product.”     Gary Tamminga, Project Manager, Franklin Partners

Gaines Pediatric Dentistry
Grand Rapids MI

First Companies was selected by Dr. Daniel O’Callaghan to construct his new building on the corner of 68th and Kalamazoo. Gaines Pediatric Dentistry focuses on delivering quality dental care to children. The office design and layout makes kids feel welcome and at ease with bright, cheery colors, pinwheel light fixtures and the use of soft, curved shapes throughout. The floor plan includes a play area off the main waiting room and an alcove off the exam area where a gumball-like machine dispenses toys versus candy when the child is finished. The building has a total of 5,300 square foot on two levels. The 1,372 square feet downstairs has a staff breakroom and lots of storage. Dr. O’Callaghan also has 968 on the main level that he is leasing to another tenant to help offset some of his costs and provide options for expansion in the future, if needed.

“The entire experience was great and I would highly recommend First Companies to other medical professionals. No request was too small for them. The team included me in many details and decisions – which is what I wanted. They explained everything very well and the process was quite smooth with no real challenges. Our project manager was very well organized and always available when we needed him. The project was completed right on schedule.”
Dr. Daniel O’Callaghan

Wayland MI

Holland (headquartered in Holland, MI) hired First Companies to construct its new trucking terminal at 10151 Division Avenue SW, Wayland, MI. The new facility includes a 48,790 SF terminal with 110 truck docks and 6,300 SF of new office space. The 22-acre site also includes a new 16,000 SF maintenance building with a fueling station. Holland left behind their 72 dock facility in Wyoming, MI in August of 2015 to move into the new complex providing nearly triple the yard space.

“The project went very smoothly and our experience working with First Companies has been very positive. I’ve spent almost 15 years in this industry and have overseen many construction projects of this type. My working knowledge of building terminals, combined with the experience First Companies brings, has made this project almost ‘cookie cutter,’ with no major issues or challenges.” Adam Rowe, Holland Properties Manager
