DJs Landscape Management
Grand Rapids MI

DJ VanderSlik acquired an existing building on the corner of Broadmoor and 44th and hired First Companies to complete a full renovation for his new administrative office. When entering the new office, it is clear this company is in the landscape management business. Eye-catching photos of scenes in nature line the walls, with the use of wood, color, a botanical motif and live plants all bringing in the beauty of nature throughout the office. The architect and interior designer worked together to create a timeless look that conveys the company’s business and brand.

While the construction work progressed well, and without any major challenges, the small lot size (just under an acre) made for a tight space to operate within and manage logistics. The renovation included replacing the roof and putting in a new parking lot for customers. First Companies managed the interior design of the office as well as the construction.

“Our relationship with First Companies goes back many years. I am very familiar with the quality of the company’s work and I knew that First Companies could handle what I wanted to do. I was very impressed with the work they did for Heeren Brothers and at Heritage Pointe. While we had a bit of a ‘floating’ budget and timeline, the project was completed within the parameters we agreed upon. My experience working with First Companies was very good. Our project manager stayed on top of everything and kept us well informed; and the team did a great job with the interior design and finishing touches.”

Gaines Pediatric Dentistry
Grand Rapids MI

First Companies was selected by Dr. Daniel O’Callaghan to construct his new building on the corner of 68th and Kalamazoo. Gaines Pediatric Dentistry focuses on delivering quality dental care to children. The office design and layout makes kids feel welcome and at ease with bright, cheery colors, pinwheel light fixtures and the use of soft, curved shapes throughout. The floor plan includes a play area off the main waiting room and an alcove off the exam area where a gumball-like machine dispenses toys versus candy when the child is finished. The building has a total of 5,300 square foot on two levels. The 1,372 square feet downstairs has a staff breakroom and lots of storage. Dr. O’Callaghan also has 968 on the main level that he is leasing to another tenant to help offset some of his costs and provide options for expansion in the future, if needed.

“The entire experience was great and I would highly recommend First Companies to other medical professionals. No request was too small for them. The team included me in many details and decisions – which is what I wanted. They explained everything very well and the process was quite smooth with no real challenges. Our project manager was very well organized and always available when we needed him. The project was completed right on schedule.”

Total Health Chiropractic
Grand Rapids MI

First Companies worked with Total Health Chiropractic to help them find their new location, and secure investment partners, as well as construct and now manage their new building. Located just south of Heritage Pointe, the beautiful 14,000 square foot office provides the space needed to offer the range of services and high level of care they desire for their patients. Dr. Miller knew the building he needed today and what would ensure space for future growth. First Companies made it happen – bringing together an investment group to fund the project, with Dr. Miller an investor and sole tenant.

The facility includes many specialized treatment rooms, a spa with four massage rooms, comfortable waiting areas throughout, a concierge station in the front area, consultation offices and a checkout desk. Downstairs you’ll find a business center with administrative, finance, and marketing staffs as well as a call center. The space was designed to immediately make customers feel at home and comfortable in the environment, using a 575 gallon salt water reef aquarium and decorator elements that bring in the sea to help people relax and decrease their stress.

“Our experience with First Companies has been nothing short of fantastic! First Companies has a very good reputation in the area and they exceeded our expectations. They are very solution-oriented and really looked out for our best interest. I have and will continue to recommend First Companies to others. We are very thankful to everyone at First Companies for helping to make our dreams into reality!”

The Goddard School
Grand Rapids MI

When owner, Lindsay Moore, decided to start her own business, she began looking for suitable locations for The Goddard School she planned to open. She found the ideal property and construction partner with First Companies. The 8800 square foot facility in Byron Center was constructed to very high standards for safety and quality set by the Goddard organization. All classroom sizes, setups, and fixtures follow strict guidelines which include fixtures that fit the age of the child and continue to increase in size as the children grow. The fence design keeps children safe and secure while allowing them to see outside and learn from their surroundings. The overall design and layout ensures a fun, comfortable learning environment as well as compliance with all regulations.

“First Companies worked with Goddard to gain a full understanding of the needs and requirements of the school. They also took care of obtaining all city approvals and permits for us. From the very beginning, First Companies was very helpful and diligent in following Goddard’s high standards. The project management team was excellent to work with – very helpful and responsive at all times. They went above and beyond in so many areas. Their work made the experience very positive in many ways.”  Lindsey Moore, Owner

Franklin Partners/Spectrum Health
Grand Rapids MI

When Spectrum Health decided to move 500 of its employees in the Information Systems department to downtown Grand Rapids, Franklin Partners LLC (owner/developer of 25 Ottawa Ave NW) had the perfect location. First Companies was hired to complete the renovations that included floors 2-6, with the first phase of floors 5 and 6 shown here. Spectrum Health was seeking a high-amenity, urban location to use as a recruiting tool to attract and retain top talent. The “class A” office space provides about 80,000 square feet of open, collaborative workspace with high ceilings, timber structure, exposed columns, and masonry walls.

“First Companies has done an outstanding job on the Spectrum project. The schedule mandated sub-contractors be on time with people and materials, and everyone has excelled in their respective tasks. Material issues were worked through in a timely manner and Spectrum is delighted with the finished product.”     Gary Tamminga, Project Manager, Franklin Partners

616 Lofts on Michigan
Grand Rapids MI

616 Lofts on Michigan is the most recent project completed by 616 Development and First Companies. This mixed use building is located in the Midtown neighborhood and was the first ground-up project for 616 Development, with 68,000 square feet and many new and historic amenities. The property includes 54 one and two bedroom apartments, underground parking and 9,700 square feet of retail space on the street level.

“We started construction in September of 2014, which meant pouring a significant amount of concrete during the very harsh winter. First Companies was able to collaborate with Kent Companies to work through the elements to keep the project moving forward, ensuring our completion date was not compromised. Our project manager also took the time to work with the architect, structural engineer and lumber supplier to create a solution for panelized construction that met all building and fire code requirements. This level of pre-planning not only saved us significant amounts of money, but also reduced our original project schedule. Our experience with First Companies has been delightful. They think in the position of the owner, treat subcontractors fairly, and are true partners who consistently exceed our expectations.”  Jeffrey R. Olsen, Project Director, 616 Development
